JENNIFER FISHER INTERVIEW

JENNIFER FISHER INTERVIEW

In 2005, then wardrobe stylist, Jennifer Fisher launched her distinctive jewelry line out of frustration. Having just had her first child, she wanted a unique piece of jewelry that had her child’s name on it and reflected her personal style. Unable to find what she wanted, she decided to design it herself: a dog tag charm hand stamped with her son’s name. After strangers and friends alike inquired about the necklace, she decided to launch her eponymous label. Today, her business has greatly expanded from that first dog tag to include pendants, chains, bracelets, rings and even men’s pieces. Her bold, edgy jewelry is favored by celebrities such as Rihanna, Katy Perry and Jennifer Aniston and has been featured in the pages of Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and W. Currently, her selection of brass cuffs, rings and charms are the accessories on everyone’s lips. The designer and now mother of two talked to us about her individual aesthetic, inspirations and why she loves what she does.

Fashion Salade: What piece of jewelry do you think every woman should own?
Jennifer Fisher: A custom Jennifer Fisher charm necklace!

FS: You began the brand after the birth of your first child when you realized the industry did not have any pieces that reflected your personal style. Did you always want to be a jewelry designer?
JF: I actually wanted to be a fashion editor but ended up becoming a stylist after styling my first commercial back in the ‘90s.

FS: What plans do you have for your brand within the next 5 – 10 years?
JF: Freestanding stores and possibly a lifestyle store as well.

FS: Describe the typical Jennifer Fisher customer.
JF: It is anyone. Each piece we sell is completely different from one another. My brand is really about reflecting your own personal style. From delicate to heavy, it varies on the woman.

FS: You began your career as a wardrobe stylist. How is jewelry design and styling different? Any similarities?
JF: They are similar in that you need to be resourceful and creative but the jobs are completely different. I definitely prefer jewelry design!

FS: What are some of your current and constant inspirations?
JF: I am constantly inspired by vintage rock bands and industrial style; they are always reflected in the line.

FS: What’s your work process like once you have an idea to the time it is a finished product? Do you work on a fashion schedule?
JF: The turnaround from sketch to metal sample runs about two weeks. We work on our own schedule. I have only recently started to follow seasons.

FS: Is there one piece in your collection you think is timeless and works for every woman?
JF: Any style of the dog tag charm. It was my first piece and the easiest to build around.

FS: How would you define your design aesthetic? What excites you about designs and innovations in jewelry right now?
JF: I am clean with an edge. I like to layer varied textures. As for right now, I am loving the acrylic trend.

FS: If you weren’t designing jewelry, what would you be doing?
JF: I would definitely own a store with a mix of luxury goods, home design items and accessories. I love stores, like Maxfield in Los Angeles, which mix fashion and lifestyle.

FS: Personally, who are some of your favorite clothing, accessory and jewelry brands?
JF: Celine, Isabel Marant, Stella McCartney, Balmain, Rick Owens. For bags, Dax Gabler and Jerome Dryfuss.

FS: Have you ever considered doing a collaboration with another designer or brand?
JF: I am actually in talks to do one now.

FS: What do you love about being a designer?
JF: Freedom.

FS: Where are your pieces sold?
JF: Exclusively on my website, www.jenniferfisherjewelry.com, at all Barneys New York Stores and at www.barneys.com

FS: What’s next for Jennifer Fisher, the brand and the person?
JF: Stay tuned to see!
